In August, we wrote about the concept of Blended Content. Blended content is a mix of AI-generated content that a human edits and expands upon. Now it looks like even HR is agreeing with Chubby the Cat. While it’s tempting and effective to use ChatGPT to write the entirety of your job application, recruiters say that it isn’t that you’re using ChatGPT but that there isn’t enough of YOU in your AI content. They’re really looking for blended content.

Recruiters can tell when you overuse ChatGPT

Unsurprisingly, recruiters don’t seem upset when you use AI to write applications. First, recruiters claim they can tell when you’ve used ChatGPT. This is an excellent reason to run any cover letters, resumes, and application essays through AI Detector Pro. They are more upset that they don’t see enough of YOU in your application. Bonnie Dilber, a recruiting manager at Zapier, states, “it signals to me that the person may not know what they are talking about or how to blend AI-generated content with their own ideas.”

How to Write Blended Content

If you don’t know how to write well, we recommend taking a developmental course and taking it seriously. ChatGPT may clean up your grammar, but you need to understand how to insert an authentic voice professionally. For example, I use Grammarly to help me quick-edit my passive voice sentences. When I run it, it also tells me to change other things about my sentence structure, like the phrase “need to” a sentence ago. I make deliberate decisions on whether or not I want to take Grammarly’s advice. This way, I sound more like myself.

Sometimes, my sentences are longer than they should be, which I find acceptable. This way, I can use some form of generative AI (Grammarly) to work more quickly but ignore it when I want to use my authentic voice to create more blended content rather than Grammarly generative AI content. Part of learning to write is choosing how and when to make these decisions. Decision-making in writing with an AI tool is what helps create blended content.

Second, you can use AI Detector Pro as an editing tool the same way I use Grammarly. There are several mistakes the recruiters mention that AI Detector Pro will automatically catch for you. For instance, when you are asked to write, “Why are you interested in this position?” run the verbiage you get from ChatGPT through AI Detector Pro. After you use the AI Detector Pro humanizing function, add some personal details, like real-life stories of when you were an “excellent communicator” or “adept with technology.”

Personal Details Provided by ChatGPT Repeat – Don’t Use Them

According to recruiters, ChatGPT scans their website, pulls off the company’s mission statement, and creates a paragraph. They then read that paragraph across hundreds of applications. Figure out a personal touch that only you would know. If AI comes up with a cute “personal touch” anecdote. Pull it out. Recruiters say that they read so many applications that they even get the same “personal touch” anecdote over and over again. Apparently, many applicants sent Zapier the same flower shop anecdote. Unless your resume has a flower shop job, don’t use anything that seems like “and here’s how I would do this with your company’s product” that AI gives you as the “personal touch.” Keep your personal touches professional but personal to you. Personality creates blended content, not AI.

How AI Detector Pro can Help you create Blended Content

AI Detector Pro has many features that help you easily develop blended content. For example, our phraseology tool quickly surfaces the most overused words in ChatGPT. We always talk about how we update our algorithm daily. Part of this update is tracking the most overused words in ChatGPT so that we can show you where they are. Additionally, the recruiters in the article also talked about how robotic the sentences sounded. That’s why we have a Tone Analysis map, which lets you see precisely how robotic you sound. Recently, we added functionality to help you vary your tone. As we’ve said before, 93% of employers want college graduates to understand generative AI technology. This story shows that you need to use the tools that help you use AI well. The assignment is to blend your content into what you get out of AI, not just turn it in mindlessly.
