What is Generative AI?

Let’s start with a brief overview of AI. You should know more about generative AI before diving headfirst into using it for something as important as a job search. AI is in the media almost daily, but terms are often misused, leading to mistakes, like not using an AI Detector tool before submitting AI-produced documents. These mistakes could negatively impact your job search.

Generative AI is a class of computer models that quickly produce work (like essays, images, or papers) in the same way as humans. Generative AI is not human but uses original human content to quickly parse and produce content in response to queries (questions). The most famous computer model for generative AI is GPT. OpenAI is the company that owns ChatGPT, the most famous GPT chatbot. You can ask ChatGPT questions. These questions are known “prompts.” ChatGPT will produce responses to your questions within seconds. You can adjust your prompts to help ChatGPT write in a different style. For instance, you can ask it to write with “burstiness.” People are coming up with different types of prompts regularly. Prompts train the AI to produce content in different styles or voices. The risk of these prompts is that they can produce poorly written output.

Generative AI has its benefits. The most significant advantage is that generative AI can produce content quickly. However, it also has downsides, some of which we’ve covered in our previous blogs.
